The wheel in my 300zx has a pretty nasty wheel wobble at around 65. Any ideas what it might be? I'm taking out down to the tie shop tomorrow

Unbalanced or separating tire.

Steering wheel or actual wheel? Could be unbalanced or uneven wear of tire, bad tie rod, ball joint, or wheel bearing.

Steering wheel. I'm hoping it's just alignment

What you'll get here is a bunch of things that can cause that wobble and there are quite a few. Is it new? Only at speed? Do bumps around town seem bigger than normal? What happens when you brake from that speed?

Only at speed. Braking seems fine.

Tire may be out-of-balance, but maybe a bent rim

if it only happens at 65, most likely a wheel weight fell off and one of your tires is now out of balance. I'd have the tires balanced before I agreed to an alignment. My dad took my moms car in years ago for the same problem, the shop told my dad the tie rods were heavily worn and they didn't think it would make it back home, they wanted to replace tie rods and do an alignment. I told him to take it to the tire shop, they balanced the tires, confirmed the tie rods were just fine and the problem was solved. Total bill 15 bucks......

Sounds like front end alignment. .Could be a wheel bearing, I suppose. You could jack it up and see...but sounds like you'll know by tomorrow! Let us know what you find out.

Rims are all new, so probably not that.

Do you live in a snowy place? Could be snow or something else stucked in the wheel... I get nasty wobbles if I don't clean them correctly before leaving...

Nope. I live in beautiful sunny Los Angeles

I'm another vote for getting the wheels balanced first.

Even if new, you need to balance them, also check tyre pressures.. I used to get a wobble around 95mph, then figured out my front left was 20psi short, the sensor in the wheel had malfunctioned..

A friend took his car to the shop for something minor and they came back with a laundry list of critical repairs that needed to be done. My friend said, "Wow! That sounds terrible! I can't believe I made it to the shop alive. Please just fix what I brought it in for."

What's the road surface look like? Some highways with grooved tracks would cause that generation of Maxima to have pretty bad wobbling in the steering due to the shape of the tread and size of the tires (speaking from personal experience). Not sure how much of the steering/tire design was used in the 300ZX in the late-90s/early-2000s, but it sounds a lot like that.

Yeah you have to be careful, they really take you for a ride if you have no car knowledge. I'm glad everyone in my family gets my opinion or my brother's opinion before paying for service. We used to do all the work on all the cars but these days, time is more valuable than the money saved.
